Problems with wrong USB Device Instance IDs

Hi there,

I have a problems with your software reporting what seems to be wrong USB Device Instance IDs.

We are for your information a hardware device manufacture and we are trying to tunnel some of our USB devices to a VMware guest OS for some testing.

My problem is that the device ID’s reported to the consumer PC by your software is not the same as the actual ID of the real physical device plugged into the provider PC. The following shows an example of that your software reports:
 “USB\VID_xxxx&PID_xxxx&REV_0400\1&2D12BED1&0&0” (USB\VID_XXXX&PID_YYYY\Z&ZZZZZZZ&Z&A)

It seems like the above ID is fabricated or something as the real id is actually “D8902F01” and not “2D12BED1”

Could this be an error or do you have a good explanation of what could be going on here?

The type of device in our hardware is a FTDI chip where we open the device 'by serial number', so when tunneled through your software then the serial number we extract from the Device ID apparently no longer match in the consumer end of the tunnel.

I actually got it to work by editing the registry entry for our device by changing the real serial number to the one reported by FTDI. But this is a work-around and would much rather like if your tunneling software could just simply report the actual Device Instance ID.

Looking forward to hear from you,

LP
