I was having problems with my Windows Mobile Phone with Bluetooth. I could not synchronize it with my PC because Active Sync application cannot work with COM-ports with numbers higher than COM20.
The standard Microsoft libraries typically limit addressable Com ports from Com 1 to Com 8 on some field PCs. With the advent of Bluetooth interfaces for survey instruments virtual ports with assigned numbers beyond 8 can be created. Serial Port Mapper is the recommended fix for the problem.
Serial Port Mapper helps elder program that don't accept ports rather than COM1 and COM2 to work with any serial ports.
Fairly recently I got a new laptop computer which came, as is often the case these days, with a series of USB ports but no RS232 serial port connector. This left me with two totally unrelated problems as far as existing equipment was concerned.
