The reason for using Serial Port Mapper can be easily described. I am using a Laptop with two serial ports, COM1 and COM2. After years of using it under Windows 2000, I decided to upgrade to Win XP. CPU clock and RAM memory wasn't sufficient, so I switched back to Win2000. At that time the trouble began, and I could use the ports only as COM3 and COM4.
As you can imagine, several elder programs who serve a serial I/O don't accept ports rather than COM1 and COM2.
To avoid a complete new installation which includes reformatting the HD, I've chosen the Serial Port Mapper instead. It works perfectly. So far the story why I'm using Serial Port Mapper.
