Virtual Machine backup fails with shared disc

I have a virtualisation host running 3 virtual servers. A USB disc is connected to the host and shared through to a 2012 Essentials server. Whenever the disc is 'connected' to by this server, the daily backup of this VM fails. Backups are done at the host level which does a 'child partition snapshot' of the VM which is of course running at the time of the backup. This fails saying the snapshot has been skipped due to a transient error. If the disc is 'disconnected' the backup completes fine.
Are there any known issues whereby VM snapshots fails when a device is being shared through to a VM?

If I get you right, you share a USB driver on host PC using USB over Network Server. You also connect the device to virtual machine via USB over Network Client.
The point is that when you connect the device, it becomes inaccessible locally (when it's connected by Client). The whole scheme works this way: you plug your devices into the host PC and the device looks like it was plugged directly into a virtual machine. That is why you keep failing to make backup when the USB device is connected to Client.

Hi, not quite. The failed backup is for the child snapshot of the VM that has connected to the disc. I agree the disc is not visible on the host anymore and it does appear in the VM but the backup of that virtual machine by the host backup software fails. The backups go to a separate disc on the host. All other VM backups proceed fine. I don't think the lack of visibility of the disc on the host is anything to do with it. it is something to do with a shared usb disc in the VM itself.

Do you mean that the USB drive has anything to do with backups (i.e. backup data is not saved on it)? If so, then it is weird. The backup application makes no difference if there are any drives/devices connected to the virtual machine or not.

We have several questions:
1. Could you try to unplug the drive then plug and redirect to the virtual machine any other device? You will need to make some backup to check what causes the error - a redirected drive or absolutely any other device.

2. Plug a USB flash drive and check the same as above.

3. Does your backup application work not only on a virtual machine but on a remote computer as well? If so, could you physically plug the USB drive into any other remote machine and make a backup of that computer with your application? Will the error occur?

4. What kind of application do you use?

5. At first sight, we can not tell why backup application behaves this way when a USB device is connected. Do you see a redirected USB device on a virtual machine without any problems? Do you work with this device without issues?
